I find it fascinating how many times I run into people who have the skills for a job and don’t realize it. A self-employed plumber who works on construction sites was working at my house and he was telling me he wants to get out of plumbing because it is not steady enough work. I knew that he was able to do electrician’s work and asked him where he learned his skills. In the Air Force, they had trained him as a plumber, electrician, truck driver, and as a military policeman. As an electrician, he had worked on huge electrical generators. As soon as he said that, I knew exactly which job he could go into with almost little training: Alternatenative Energy Technician… He actually has many opportunities he could shoose from based on his current skill set. As such it would not take him long to gain a working understanding of either solar or wind energy technologies. Both technologies offer many technician job opportunities and are part of the “green movement”. With the construction of new homes hitting its sharpest decline, I wonder how many of these workers who are looking for jobs would fit into alternative energy tech jobs.
